Research & Development

Comprehensive support for oil palm growers and sustainable practices.

Research must be undertaken continuously to discover innovative ideas that will help in increase FFB production and yield by researching on plant pathology, agronomy, entomology, socio-economic research, and pest and diseases control.

PNGOPRA is a private research entity established by the industry and funded through levies charged on the farmers. PNGOPRA has operated successfully in undertaking research to support farmers with innovative ways and techniques to help improve their productivity and production. However, there are still gaps in the level of assistance to smallholder farmers as research should be linked to extension services to better support growers.

Going forward, the Government through OPIC, once established, will consider options to develop and strengthen research and development activities that support government initiatives and strategies aimed at growing and expanding the oil palm sector in PNG. This includes support to smallholder growers through extension services
